About My Classes
I try to keep my classes relaxed, light of heart, and fun. I like students to feel at home and amongst friends.
I encourage wise-ass remarks and goofing off. I like yoga to feel like a mix of physical therapy and play time.
I’m also very precise in teaching the poses, and if you’re not used to that, it can be overwhelming at first.
With patience and regular attendance, though, it all starts to become second nature. Finding the optimal alignment
and "juice" within the poses takes time and tinkering and understanding.
Nothing of any lasting value comes easily or quickly.
My focus is on relieving the aches and pains and grippy-tightnesses created by everyday life ---
especially as we get older!
I choose poses for their effects, kind of like physical therapy.
I want my students to leave feeling that all the kinks have been worked out, and their bodies, minds and hearts have been refreshed and renewed.
All my classes are mixed-level: Beginner’s Level 2 and Intermediates. While some brand-spanking
new beginners will be
fine beginning with these classes,
some will not. Usually, my classes are not appropriate for people who have never done yoga at all. While I don’t stress the
"work-out", most people feel they’ve worked, and some will feel challenged. My classes are
particularly beneficial for
athletes of any kind and age,
people who are on the tight side or people who need more strength. While many of my students are active women in their 30s-50s,
I also have many younger students. And while classes are more highly attended by women, I have lots of male students, too.
Heads Up: I teach yoga, not fitness. All my classes have some sort of spiritual content,
which gets us out of the day-to-day
mind-grind, that analytical, critical and stressful part of our minds. So we have a short centering
period at the beginning of
class (10 min) where we shake off the day’s activities and get into the right frame of mind. I often read a poem, quote from a book,
or just bring up some topic I’ve been following or thinking upon. There’s also a 10 minute meditation at the end of class
which also helps to soothe the nervous system.
